That's conky - either install from the Software Centre or Synaptic - alternatively from the terminal with


sudo apt-get install conky

Then you need to configure it to your liking - have a look here - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5436679

The first link in that thread/post gives loads of different things others have done.
