I finally had everything working the way i wanted it to, and all of a sudden the sound stop working. It happen between me installing adobe flash, and setting the correct drivers for my graphic card. The thing is i hear the drums when you first turn the computer on and ubuntu prompts you to log in. I also looked through alot of other posts describing the same issue, however their hardware was different (even though i doubt it is a hardware issue) and i either got lost halfway during the fix, or if i complete it, it did not work. Can anyone help me out? I am on ubuntu 10.4.

if you hear the drums then your hardware is OK. Something else obviously is muting your sound.

When you get to the desktop and you examine preferences - sound, are any of the mute checkboxes ticked, or is the output volume sliders towards the left hand side rather than the right?

no.. i checked and double checked the preferences. Nothing was muted and everything looked ok.
