After much deliberation the choice to install Ubuntu was made,
I decided to build a test rig from spare parts to "cut my teeth " with an alternative OS. Of course, I am dual booting with Windows for that feeling of safety and control. After installing Ubuntu in the wrong location I found the post covering the un-installation procedure, but decided to forget about it as this rig will be destined for the garage anyway once my skills and confidence levels increase.

What to do now? For me the bookstore is probably the best bet, I'm sure theres many things to consider now that this OS is loaded. Gaming and CAD programs are a large part of my every day computing needs so this will be an interesting journey started. -Del

Ah, you're a gamer? You should look into cedega. It's a gaming service that allows you to run games within linux. You can use a program called wine, but most of the time, you'll need workarounds. Most gamers that use ubuntu though will stick to dual booting though. Cedega is based on wine, but has more directX support, and has configurations for each game you install.

If you look in the software centre, assuming you are using 9.10 or 10.04 you will find some of the best FPS games around as well as logic games and a wide variety of other such as TeeWorlds, Nexuiz, Scorched 3D, Wormux, Glest, Tremulous I could go on, literally for hours.

CAD is also covered under Linux with apps such as http://www.cycas.de/, http://www.gcad3d.org/ and a few others as well.

So no need for a journey, everything you need is right there at your fingertips.
