10.04 no display

Due to the problem with the upgrade killing xp partitions, I reformatted my drives and am trying to install 10.04. However, after choosing install ubuntu or try ubuntu without changes, my monitor stops getting input from my computer. If I click the try ubuntu, I hear the start up noise on my speakers, but I see nothing. Does anyone have any advice?
(I have an ATI 5770 and a Gateway FHD2401)
