Just downloaded the PC-BSD DVD (http://www.pcbsd.org/content/view/152/11/) for install...next step burning the DVD then installing it.

Is anybody else running PC-BSD 8.0?

I did notice you can use either KDE, Enlightenment, Gnome or XFCE
http://www.pbidir.com/bt/category/WM

It's been a while since I have used BSD, regularly...I look forward to trying PC-BSD again.

Does anybody know if they have fixed the dual boot problem; always before I could never get it to recognize the XP partition which is kept on my second hard drive.

So, what you're saying is that BSD will cause semi-average looking women around you to don vinyl outfits that show off their less-than-flattering figures?

I tried PC-BSD 8.0, it is crap. It locks up and freezes randomly, and Firefox is crashing. I managed to fix freezing with recompiling kernel.

FreeBSD works better, even thought it says it should be the same OS, just repackaged. It is good for messing around, but it is nowhere near Linux for real work.

The problem with pc-bsd is that you're never going to be able to install the range of packages that are available in Linux, especially the *buntu repo's. It's pbi selection of packages is very small, so youre going to have to use ports and build from source. If you're going to do that you may as well run Gentoo.

How well do terminal commands transfer from Linux to BSD? I know they are both Unix based, but I'm guessing there are differences...

Read My Signature (if I changed it, it said Linux For Life!)

Cool. When you do, make sure you post a full write up on here. I'd like to see how it fares, esp with things like flash etc.

What's the difference between PC-BSD and FreeBSD? I wanted to wait for the next version of FreeBSD as I've installed this...hmm maybe around 10 years ago. :)
Thanks
PS: What about running linux binaries? And the kernel? Same as on OSX nowadays? Must have nicely improved then since 10y ago.

The difference between PC-BSD and FreeBSD is that PC-BSD is FreeBSD with KDE-Desktopenvironment preinstalled. PC-BSD has some tools well integrated into KDE for system administration. And it has got its PBI system, to install software. But you can use the FreeBSD ports there as well.

Linux binaries are running on FreeBSD. Check out the great FreeBSD handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/linuxemu.html)

Thanks so I'll give it a try first in VirtualBox.

What about the kernel? Is that the same now as on OSX Mac?

No, FreeBSD is built upon a monolithic kernel, whereas OSX (Darwin) possesses a hybrid-kernel, consisting of parts of the Mach-microkernel and parts of the FreeBSD kernel.

did you just try the latest version of PC-BSD 8.0?

I tried PC-BSD 7.1.1, 8.0-Beta, and 8.0-RELEASE, all as it came out. Last one was 2 months ago I think. Same issues with every single one.

On the other hand, FreeBSD (all versions) run pretty nicely with UFS, but are buggy with ZFS. OpenBSD is more stable, but even more lags behind Linux. I have been messing with BSDs very long time, I even try using FreeBSD and OpenBSD on production server. That did not go very well. Lets just say that RHEL/CentOS and Solaris are too good to even consider BSD for production server.

As for screenshot... of what? Freezing? Screenshoot is frozen by design :D If you ask about how PC-BSD looks, here is desktop of 7.1.1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:711-screenshot.png). I beleive PC-BSD site has picture of PC-BSD 8.0 Hubble edition.

PBI is abomination. It practically shoehorns all the libraries which program uses into one package, so for example Firefox comes about 80mb (http://www.pbidir.com/bt/pbi/49/firefox). As a result of that, multiple instances of same libraries get distributed with different programs and get installed multiple times on multiple places. PBIs answer on dependancy handling is: "Lets just install everything in every folder".

If you really want to try BSD, I suggest FreeBSD or OpenBSD. PC-BSD is just collection of cheap hacks on top of FreeBSD. I figure you want BSD to learn something new. You get that with FreeBSD and OpenBSD. PC-BSD just tries to abstract things to make it easier, but if you want easy why do you want BSD then?

No 64 bit WINE. I couldn't use it. Besides, installation of packages is a hassle, with ports AND add_pkg.

I've always been a fan of FreeBSD but the last (and first) time I tried PC-BSD it crashed and killed my computer so I'm going nowhere near it. FreeBSD is rock-solid though.
