I upgraded from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx and no longer have sound. I've tried many suggested solutions with no luck. Is there a way to downgrade to the previous LTS without doing a fresh install and having to copy all my files, folders, programs etc.?

You hopefully used clonezilla to backup your 8.04 installation before attempting the upgrade. If so, just do a restore, because there is no "rollback" function in Ubuntu.

If you did not make a backup, you should kick yourself now. After that, you should backup your data and try a clean install of 10.04.

well theres no reason to downgrade right away. what are the specs for your pc? maybe we can get sound working and you can keep 10.04 and enjoy the many benefits of it.
