View Full Version : Feedback on Nexenta platform?

Has anyone tried nexenta (http://nexenta.org/) ?

Basically, nexenta is an opensolaris-derived distro using ubuntu (debian) GUI and package manager. So in other words, nexanta takes the better of the two: the solid file system (ZFS) and platform of Opensolaris with the many applications from UBUNTU adapted...

This is true in theory as for instance lots of drivers are missing under opensolaris. So if anyone is using it feel free to enlighten us ;)

Nope, but mainly just because it is marketed as a "server distro" and not a Desktop OS. I'd also rather have Skype, which isn't really possible with *solaris.

I love Solaris, but compatibility drives me mad. Not with other software, but amongst Solaris distros.

I should give Nexenta a try though.

Yeah, that's the whole point: from its inception opensolaris has been a server-based distro very stable (the only one for instance which didn't initially crash on my g31-chipset-PC during installation whereas almost all linux distros did except opensuse using a generic and very SLOW video driver). Sun would probably be better off optimizing its distro's virtualization software AND drivers... but it's not the way chosen by Nexenta team, itself "sponsored" by Nexenta system inc (http://www.nexenta.com/corp/company), so wait and see.
