Hi,

I recently took a quick look at the Linux Mint 9, Isadora and Im very impressed with its Look & Feel. However, I dont think I will replace my 10.04 with it (even though the 10.04 was a dissappointment for me).

I was wondering if there is an easy way to replicate the same experience on Ubuntu 10.04; like copying some Theme elements, wallpapers, icon sets and more importantly that nice Gnome Application Menu.

Any ideas?

Thanks...

Also, you do know that mint is based on ubuntu. So when you install the newest mint, it's basically 10.04.

Otherwise I have no idea. Search gnome-look.org for their themes, or look around their main page for some downloads of media.

Haven't use Isadora yet, so I don't know what you really mean by Look & Feel exactly, but you can get the Isadora's wallpapers (http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=1374), and then install the Shiki Metacity (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Shiki-Colors?content=86717) theme, and you are *basically* done.
You'll have to get yourself determined to reproduce the menu, but it seems doable.

Its all about expectations. Maybe my expectations are too high. Maybe they are not too high but as Ubuntu is developing and improving its going to a different direction than I would like to see. Im not blaming anyone for that, maybe I should have better worded the "disappointing" part of my post. Maybe a better one like this; "10.04 made me a lot less happy than I thought it would".

As far as I know Mark hired Usability and User Interface professionals more than a year ago. It is more than 2 full release cycle time work on the subject, which I believe is a fair time to see some rocking results of that work.

It didnt rock anything on my side. Even further, its less usable for me in some aspects.

I believe a good looking GUI is important in terms of usability, maybe not as much as the functionality but it is still a very important aspect. For me, the new GUI is boring and a kind of depressing. I mean it still is, after some expert work.

Who removed my old add/remove programs and put that crappy Ubuntu Software Center in? After 2 or 3 releases(I guess 2 major and 1 minor) it is still less functional and less usable. Why it has been replaced too early if developing the new alternate will take such a long time?

Who moved the window control buttons to the left? Im guessing the vast majority is reverting them back to right again, just like I did. I know it has been moved to free up space for some social internet notifications on the right side but I dont care much about that social improvements either. Not that Im un-social but I really would prefer the time&energy going on for more reliable and more performant and more productive Ubuntu, not for more internet social Ubuntu.

Oh well, there were a couple of more things that makes me less happy with the new release but they are skipping my mind at the moment.

Maybe you were expecting some of the Karmic bugs to have been fixed? Fat chance!

Yes these Shiki colors themes are really well designed, better than the usual Gnome-look tat!

Fair enough. out-of-the-box i would agree ubuntu is not that stunning, but i feel that the ability to customize it in so many ways is what makes it so nice. For me, what i have is not boring. Then again your other option is windows, mac, or a different flavor of linux. Your call sir.

Enjoy green Lucid :)
