Update manager

I see that the update manager has been 'simplified' and no longer allows the user to choose which packages to update. Now it's all or none. What's the best way to request the old functionality?

I guess this was just due to a dependency issue. The functionality has returned since that was resolved. On a side note, it seems strange that I was able to install a package when dependencies weren't met. I had assumed that the installation failed and apt-get would not proceed. Are there any switches to require that dependencies are met?
