upgrade question

I am running 9.10 and considering upgrading to 10.04 via update manager. If I do that would my system be the same with just a the new version of ubuntu. I mean would all my favourites be in firefox, contacts in thunderbird, all my themes and wallpapers still be there. Compiz fusion settings etc.

In theory, That should be the case.

Upgrades sometimes bring other problems, sometimes they go great.

I tend to try a live disk first, then clean install.

Yes, it's safe, just bear in mind that it's going to deactivate/delete any repos you added manually. All the stuff you have installed so far, favourites, etc. should be intact except maybe for some software that is not officially supported in the current release.
