Lucid Blank Screen Flashing Cursor

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Aspire One netbook, but everytime while booting, I am stuck at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I've tried reinstalling but to no help. I've also tried installing 9.10, which will boot, then upgrading to 10.04 which then produces the same problem. Any ideas?

i got the same symptom with IBM Thinkpad T60.

I have the same problem and I'm unable to boot from an install disk either. All I get is the black screen with a flashing cursor.

There is an actual "blinking cursor" bug. Might be fixed by now, I'm fairly sure I saw it listed amongst the known issues of the release notes on the ubuntu site wiki

I just tried to install Ubuntu, and it failed while installing grub. When I boot the system, I get a blinking cursor. Perhaps your grub is broken?

I have the same blinking cursor on startup, which is then followed by a VERY quick command line error message that's so fast, all I see are "ERROR" and "bug (?)". Then the system finishes booting.
