Today's College Students Lack Empathy
Jeanna Bryner
LiveScience Managing Editor
College students today are less likely to "get" the emotions of others than their counterparts 20 and 30 years ago, a new review study suggests.
Specifically, today's students scored 40 percent lower on a measure of empathy than their elders did...

Kids now might just be more honest compared to kids in the '70's, might parse the language differently, etc. It's pretty hard to objectively measure something like that.

The rise in social media could also play a role.
"The ease of having 'friends' online might make people more likely to just tune out when they don't feel like responding to others' problems, a behavior that could carry over offline," O'Brien said.

On the contrary, I believe myself and my friends all feel more empathy than our parents ever did. But then again, a good amount of my friends (including myself) grew up with at least one abusive parent, so perhaps the results are slanted.

Maybe it's an increase in highly functioning autism, through personally if someone told me I lack empathy at college that would be mild compared to what most people have used to describe me. I was called a sociopath by staff at my local college.

I am not actually worried about it at all, I am better off without ignorant people. Maybe I'll post a rant later about it in my own thread, might be worth some lol.

As a soon-to-be college student, I can easily believe that. There are many stupid people my age.

Yes it is, they told me I was fine and than a week latter I am locked out of my account. It actually has less to do with computers than you would think, I suppose I didn't see boundaries as I was planning a technical joke on a not so computer literate acquaintance.
No hacking, no viruses, no nothing really - Just a misunderstanding. I have found that computers are not to be toyed with, seems kinda simple but we all learn some things the hard way. If I had it to go over with I would have been more professional.

Please add an update to that thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1444083), I'm curious to hear exactly what happened - I hope nothing serious.

For my final project presentation in my Software Security class senior year of college, I demonstrated to the whole class how to use a usb bootable version of Fedora to hack the local SAM account on XP boxes, load the hashes into ophcrack and then we all tested it. My teacher applauded me, but the System Admin (via their snitch of an intern that was in my class) for the school had a sit down with me. Thanks to my teacher, who justified me in my defense, I did not get in trouble and was able to graduate with Summa. ;)
Computers ARE to be toyed with...that's why you build test environments. :)

The first thing I uninstall, lol. And yes, the kids at my college are lost when it comes to.... well anything other than what is on their FB page or what size rims are on their buddy's SUV.
