Which team do I...

...think will win? No idea, really. My guess is one of the usual favourites (Germany, Brazil, Italy, etc...) (i.e. no major upsets)

...hope will win? The Oranje. After blowing it after those first three games in the last Euro I think those Dutchmen owe their fans big-time. Pity we won't get to see van Niestelrooij and van der Sar this time around.

Failing the Dutch winning, it'd be awesome if one of the African teams won. Cote d'Ivoire maybe?

They are playing really nice these days. They were at the final of the Confederation Cup, but lost to Brazil (USA 2 x 3 Brazil).

I am a big fan of England team so I hope they win this year. But it is tough for them as other country like Italy, Brazil, France, Germany and Argentina are among the favourite. I like to see New Zealand too as this is their first appearance after 28 years I think.

But there maybe upset too particular losing to South Korea. They maybe underdog but they have a trick or two up their sleeves.

I live in Cape Town and football fever is hitting us bigtime!! All schools have been closed for the entire World Cup!! The local team Bafana Bafana is being supported by just about everyone. SA flags are everywhere, as are Bafana Bafana jerseys. Lekker vibe :)

I've only been here 8 years and I'll be supporting Germany all the way (I'm from Germany originally).

Can't wait either. Even if I honestly can't see my beloved Italy retain the title.

My principal concerns are about Argentina: Milito is a hell of a player (22 goals in 35 Serie A matches this year, 24 goals in 31 Serie A matches in the 08/09 season) and should compete for the Ballon d'or, Messi is outstanding, Pastore will be a big surprise (if Maradona lets him play) and Mascherano is indeed solid.
The only one that can screw up things is Maradona. By the way, he is already doing it: how dare you leave Cambiasso and most of all ZANETTI out of the team?

I am also waiting for this mega event to start and I think this is the time for England to shine. Even though Beck is not available to them but still they have so many great players like rooney, terry, lampard, gerrard........ in their team. So I would go with England or Spain to be the winners

It would be great if England won however, even though we have a few "world class" players in the squad they can never play as a team. Other teams in the world cup play better as a team than England. We always seem to rely on just one player to help us to win the world cup such as David Beckham or Wayne Rooney and if they get injured we have no chance. We never seem to build a team to compete but build a team around one player.

Apart from which the media here seem to think we have a God given right to win the World cup every time simply because we invented the sport of football (soccer if your from the US).

In the end I just hope its a good tournament.

I really want the US to do well so that more people here take the sport seriously.

I also support the Asian countries and African countries because they're underdogs. Australia will be a good team to watch out for.

Spain has won Euro 2008 with some fantastic display of team work and brilliant individual skills by certain players, and are huge favourites to win the 2010 World Cup.

Argentina also has a very strong team, with players like Diego Milito, Sergio "Kun" Aguero, and Lionel Messi, who all have amazing ball control and dribbling skills.

As far as Brazil goes, I'm not so sure about their current team, as I have not been following them lately. I just know that Ronaldinho is not included in the squad, and that Dunga wants the team to play more tactically, which is something the Brazillian people don't like.

I think those three teams are the big favourites to win this year, but as we all know, this is football, and anything could happen.

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/9052/smallvuvuzela1.jpg

The vuvuzela came to international attention during the run-up to the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup, both hosted in South Africa. The world football governing body, FIFA, wanted to ban the use of vuvuzelas during the World Cup 2010 because of concerns that hooligans could use the instrument as a weapon and that businesses could place advertisements on vuvuzelas. However the South African Football Association (SAFA) made a presentation that vuvuzelas were essential for an authentic South African football experience,[2] and FIFA decided in July 2008 to drop the ban, allowing vuvuzelas at Confederations Cup.[10] President of FIFA Sepp Blatter opposed banning the vuvuzela, saying "We should not try to Europeanise an African World Cup," Blatter has said.[11] FIFA ultimately decided to allow the instrument for the 2010 World Cup as well.

We always seem to rely on just one player to help us to win the world cup such as David Beckham or Wayne Rooney and if they get injured we have no chance. We never seem to build a team to compete but build a team around one player.

Canada does that with our (men's) Olympic hockey teams too, and occasionally we actually win. And other times we... well, don't.

As weird as it may be, having Beckham injured might be a good thing; it removes some of the "Oh, we'll just stand around and let Becks do all the work" attitude from the players and forces everyone else to step up a little bit more.

Generally though, from what I've seen in the past few Euros and World Cups, England usually looks a group of individual players running around, and not an actual team that works together consistently.

FIFA World Cup (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/) including applications to keep record ofthe game results, cool web sites and anything else related to the World Cup.

I'm not a big fan of local games, but I enjoy the World Cup. Well, football is the Brazilian national sport. This freaking country practically stops to watch the games. This year, even the Banks will be changing business hours according to game schedule. Can you believe that?

Sounds good to me. Many countries would like to do this but try to play it serious. Better this than people being at work and not actually working because they watch the football.

I wish I could post a poll, but there are 32 countries and not enough slots. So which country do you think will win the cup?
No idea but I hope it will be Greece. Not likely though.

By the way here's an interesting bit of information: in the players lists (http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/01/20/86/87/Provisional1305.pdf) submitted to FIFA England is the only country where every player on the list plays for a club in his home country. Germany and Italy have only 1 player playing outside their home country , all other teams have several.

Does this happens in your country too?

Not really. But they always mention their background, ethnicity, nationality, etc. It becomes annoying. It has happen with Benny Feilhaber...and with many other US players like Jose Francisco Torres who is half american and mexican and plays in the mexican league. Also with Oguchi Oyenwu.

Being Brasilian, Naturally I'm rooting for my countries team. I was in Rio in 2002 when they won the cup there. Pretty spectacular! It was their fifth world cup championship.

EDIT: actually I'm a dual-national. Brasilian-American. Americans though, I am sorry, they just don't "get" soccer. USA may have a good team, but our country doesn't have a love for the game like the rest of the world. People can't understand why I would purposely try to adjust my work hours whenever possible to catch games at the pub. I'll root for the US, but not against Brasil.

It is New Zealands second only appearance at the World cup. The chances of us getting the first round are very very slim. Soccer is not big in Country, It is very small here . Rugby is our sport.

Friends and soccer fans........I have devised a workaround to have the fifa worldcup widget at your Ubuntu desktop! :D

I know most of us are very experienced users, still I would like to give a step by step tutorial, so that no one should have any trouble with that.

1.First install screenlets application.

2.Launch screenlets application. Now go to the following link...

screenlets.org/index.php/Widget

download the widget application. It will be a tar.bz2 file. Simply drag it on the screenlets window and it will be installed with the name of 'Widget'.

Now go to the fifa official website widget page. Go to the following link...

www.fifa.com/newscentre/widgets/index.html

You will find many different kinds of widgets. Select whatever you like and then click the button “Add widget”. A small widget window will open. At the bottom right of the window you will find a button again called “Add Widget”. Click it and you will a get code to copy. Copy the code.

3.Right click on empty desktop----> Create document----> Empty file.
Paste the code in the empty file, save it and name it with whatever you like ending with .html (e.g. I named my file as fifa.html)

4.Now go to your home folder. Press ctrl+h . This will show hidden files and directories.

5.Now open .screenlets--->Widget--->widgets

6.Copy and paste your .html file here. Close it.

7.Now select the widget application in your screenlets window and start it. A small widget window will open. Take your cursor on any border/frame of the small window and right click----->Change Widget

8.You should see the name of the .html file which you just added. Select it and you should be good.
(If your don't see your file name, restart the widget application. You should find in your next attempt)

I am attaching few screenshots so that it could be of some help for you guys.

I hope this workaround should work for all. I know this is not the perfect thing what some of you were looking for, yet it is something closer to a handy desktop application.

Happy soccer and enjoy the world cup.

Peace and joy for all :D:guitar:

Yep. the only positive about missing WC is being healthy for next season.

Another Chelsea player, Mikel, will miss WC with knee problem. Forgot to mention that Bosingwa is also out. That brings the numbers up to 5 now.

Ah yes, Bosingwa has been out forever it seems. I have a feeling he won't be at the bridge next season.

Officially it was China who invented football. They use to kick the ball over a hoop instead of the rectangle goal post. It was FIFA who officiated it.

By wearing one of these 32 Personas to support your team, you’ll take part in the global Firefox Cup competition. Cool. I will be watching from the Internet. My ISP will stream all games. I just hope they can handle the traffic. Instead of allowing only subscribers to watch, they will be streaming for free to anyone in the country. While I think this is cool, it will make me really mad if the streams stutters or stop in the middle of the game due to excessive bandwidth usage. I can't imagine my Internet going down when Brasil is playing.

I'm going for team USA as always. I've always been a big fan of American soccer and I hope they can prove to world that US soccer is serious. Hopefully Donovan, Dempsey and Onyewu can step their game up enough to make it to at least the semis.
Realistically, though, I think Spain will win. Puyol, Capdevila, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Silva, Villa and Torres are all amazing players. I'd be going for Brazil if Dunga had let Ronaldinho play.
My biggest concern for this whole tournament, though, is me being able to watch the games. I work from 8 to 5 and all the games are at 7:30, 10, and 2:30 which means the only way I can watch them is streaming online or listen on the radio. I've gotta figure a way around this...

I was able to get my working, which is not espn but another TV site in my country, by downloading flash 10.1 from adobe, extracting it and moving the plugin file to /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/

If you are running a 32bit browser, then you can get the new version from the partner repository. No need to manually move the file. Remove flashplugin-installer and install adobe-flashplugin.

I'm not sure this will help, but it solved the problem with the site I'm using.

The issue of vuvuzela has already been addressed to FIFA as something that potentially needs to be banned due to the distractions it causes. But FIFA decided to respect the rationale of South Africa, which contested that one cannot experience football in Africa without vuvuzela. While I don't know how loud it actually is as I'm not watching the matches in the stadiums, I don't see why we shouldn't make an effort to embrace other cultures and its practices. Europeans sing, shout, and swear; South Africans blow the instrument. I find it appealing to have different vibe and atmosphere in each host country. By the end of the group stage, I'm sure you've gotten used to it.:p

Quite a few bad calls in Greece's favor. If called right the score could easily be 3-0 right now. Oh well, I'll call this karma for the 2002 world cup.

Not really. Corener kick + head shoot is pretty "standard", especially since Heinze was pretty much alone. SA's goal yesterday was much more beautiful.
