I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my system and i found a weird problem (i.e) my system hangs or freezes after minutes within login. I am having 160GB HDD where i installed Ubuntu on 20 GB and a swap space of 4 GB (since my ram is 2 GB). Wat could be the problem. While installing through CD after 76% of installation I can see Retrieving file 1 of 10, 2 0f 12 like that. Is the copy I have downloaded have any fault. Someone please suggest me a solution. I am very eager to work in Ubuntu. Sorry I dont know to type in tamil.

P.s :- The same thing has happened with Ubuntu 9.04 Karmic Kola too but am able to work fine on & upto Linux Mint 7

2 things you can do.
1) Try downloading it once again and cut it in a DVD/CD
2) Try to remove any extra hardware (external graphic card, NIC card) i.e Apart from in-built ones

I think, it must be something with the hardware driver incompatibility as you mentioned the same happened with 9.04.

Do let us know after this.

If the installation itself was successful, I feel the disc/image was not defected. However it would be easier to first make sure it was not corrupt than to track down the problem itself.

We need some more info about your hardware. Which graphics card is there?

Did you enable the hardware drivers or compiz?

This page will help you track the problem.

hey guys im having the same problem only this hasnt happened to me before, also it seems to only happen when i perform an Action say trying to run programs or even copying files from a CD, ive tryed useing Gnome, KDE and the Console and even CLI but it always freezes, and in all the only wierd thing is that it only runs if i copy files to another computer (if i C&P on the other Computer). could it be possible that the Computer thinks it needs a Vacation? (since its been running since i installed Ubuntu 10.10 which its about 4 months now (used KSplice to update the kernel)) well i know computers dont need Vacations and the Computer is new (only half a year old) but any who hope to have the problem fixed ASAP
also for specs, the Sound Card is a Creative Labs. Sound Blaster Live, the Video Card is a Nividia built into the MoBo (dont know what model it is) and i use an AMD Althon 64 and is running Ubuntu 10.10, i mostly use it for Multi Media (High Def Video, Music, Photo Editing ,etc)

I think its related to hardware did you try any other distributions any recent ones like fedora 13 etc.... I think somethings wrong with the graphics driver

no but ive never had problems with the Drivers, but what happened was that the Surge protector was unplug while the computer was on, although i wouldnt know how that would affect it, maby there was a problem with a certain update, maby a string of code may be faulty (since its never had this problem), or maby i just need to reinstall Ubuntu its self from possibly having a faulty update (my internet was also knocked out and the updates are automatic) but hopefully this problem can be resolved quickly

ok so i reinstalled Ubuntu and it seems to fix it..... somewhat, it still freezes but it seems to hover around Multimedia (Music, Video) but almost everything else seems to work fine, hopefully the problem is fixed soon or i might have to start useing my Archos 7 Home Tablet for my Multimedia (Which is a nightmare to play videos)
