I have attempting to install Ubuntu 10.04 on an "older" system (IBM NetVista; P4 1.6GHz, 256M ram, 40G Maxtor HD) with no success. With each attempt, the install gets to approximately 40% complete, then stalls (i.e. no HD or CD activity)
I am installing 10.04 as the only OS on the system at this point, but experienced the same error when attempting a "side by side" install with Windows 98SE.

Any thoughts??

Rather than go directly to install, hit any key when the live CD starts booting to bring up a menu. You will probably have to select one of the f6 booting options to successfully boot. Maybe try noapic and nolapic first. Maybe nomodeset. It is all trial and error at this point. Once the live cd boots satisfactorily, than you are ready to install. Post your results here.

Are you able to load a live session without installing?

I was able to get the CD to load using the noapic option.
It's the first time I've gotten this far.
I will attempt install using the same option.
Wish me luck.
