Update-Manager problems

Update-Manager pops up on my Lucid installation showing a lot of updates to install, but after downloading the files it shows the following error:

Could not perform immediate configuration on 'libattr1'.Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2)

Strange thing is that apt-get update & upgrade say there is nothing to install. What is going on here?

I cannot install anything either from synaptic or ubuntu software center as well.

have you try to change your repository? from system--administration--software sources.

than run update.
