View Full Version : [all variants] Lucid Lynx login Issues

Solution:
Replace your etc/X11/xorg.conf file with a new one. I copied mine over from Hardy and it worked on lucid. There weren't many devices specified specifically, so it has many defaults.

I have a Via Unichrome Pro on-board graphics card called. Seems to be called 'vesa' as you'll see.

Thanks to Barafu for telling me what the issue was.

Some links to get you started:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-linux-configure-xorg-x11/
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=83973
http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-configure-Xorg-in-Ubuntu

Google it (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=opera&rls=en&q=xorg+configuration+ubuntu&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=)

My xorg.conf file(I also uploaded it):

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Problem:

I don't believe this have been posted before. I think this affects all-variants, I only have Kubuntu and Ubuntu, they both have this issue.

After installation or even with the while using the live disc this error occurs. After clicking login on KDE The box showing what's currently loading came up. After the third Icon loaded it crashes and I'm back at the login screen. When trying to access the Terminals at F1 - F* I get a no signal from my monitor. If i access the terminals before my first login I am able to login there. I have got some xorg logs.

Hope someone can help me soon!

ps. These disks are ones that were shipped. They worked on another PC I have.

Do you have an NVIDIA or ATI video card? You may have a driver issue.
(You can get to the log-in screen without OpenGL etc., so it only crashes when the desktop starts.)

If you have an NVIDIA card, you may want to check out this thread an see if it applies to you - the fix is very simple.

If you are using a proprietary driver and have an older card, it's possible ATI of NVIDIA discontinued support for the latest X-server release. Then you would have to install the open source driver; that's worth a try, to see if it is a driver issue, and you can do it from the command line (or use 'envy-ng', that's very simple and has a text interface).

Video driver issues can be pretty annoying; happened to me a while ago; I could not use desktop effects for a while, but in the meantime the open source driver caught up and all is well now.

Hope that helps...

P/S I did not really look at your error logs... I'm not that much of an expert myself...

Thanks anyway as I said It's a fresh install, I don't have Nvidia I have Unichrome Pro onboard. I've tried both of the below links. My pc just hangs on the both of the below will try again when i decide to install kubuntu again

Try creating the manual config of xorg.conf. The problem is that X server guesses your hardware incorrectly.

Thank you for the reply . I replaced the xorg.conf with the one i'm using in Hardy, It worked without an issue, but i'll test again today...

I'm using an old desktop with VIA VT8378 (KM400) S3 UniChrome.

I've done fresh installs of both Kubuntu and Ubuntu 10.04 on separate partitions, but experiencing this problem only with KDE. Earlier I tried 9.10 Karmic and got the same.

I've noticed that I don't have xorg.conf files on both installs and got to know this file is not a mandatory since 9.10. Anyway I've decided to do following using recovery mode:

X -configure
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
No success, still in loop. Going back to Kubuntu 9.04.

Khopstick, I'm not sure envy-ng will do it's job on Lucid. I've found same-purpose Jockey in repositories, but seems like it's text version (jockey-text) does nothing.

I tried to tweak xorg.conf and discovered that I can successfully login after adding an option to Device section:

Option "NoAccel" "true"
That's a proof we are dealing with nVidia/VIA problem.

Also I've found a simple solution for myself: Openbox. After installation I chose KDE/Openbox session and was logged in without any problems.
I've lost some "beauties" of KDE, but I didn't lost usability with no 2D acceleration.
