my computer froze with a blank screen so I turned it off, it won't boot up it starts then gives me an unsupported message do I need to reboot or is this terminal

More info is needed. Are you able to get past post? Grub2? Is this a message happening while the OS is booting? Based on your post I have no idea of what your trying to describe.
What's the exact error message, maybe you can snap a digital picture of the screen and upload it so we can see what your talking about exactly.

the computer logs on then ubuntu logo the start up sequence line starts them it stops and the word unsupported apears on screen inside a box and nothing happens

During the very beginning of booting hold the shift key. This should get you to the Grub menu. Using the down arrow keys you will be able to boot into the recovery mode. There is a menu there which allows you to select the - reconfigure graphics option - not sure of the right words. Try that and then boot normally.
