Completely new to Linux, I have a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install. I am trying to customize the system as much as possible but I find little to no options when trying to modify the system sounds.

I found a post that instructed to rename several *.ogg files which I did, and this effectively changed my startup sound, but not my logout sound. In fact, it does not play at all. Is there anything out there to make this any easier? Or is there an add-on to install to make the options more robust?
