Completely new to Linux, I have a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install. I am trying to customize the system as much as possible but I find little to no options when trying to modify the system sounds.

I found a post that instructed to rename several *.ogg files which I did, and this effectively changed my startup sound, but not my logout sound. In fact, it does not play at all. Is there anything out there to make this any easier? Or is there an add-on to install to make the options more robust?

I could be wrong, as I don't use it, but I think ubuntu tweak may have something to change sounds.

At the moment I don't have any sound at all. I tried restarting and just plain shutting down to no effect. The message I get when I click on the speaker icon is: waiting for sound system to respond.. Not sure why you need to tweak the sound; at the moment I'd be grateful for any sound at all!

Thanks for the advice but no dice.
Any additional help is appreciated.
