Disappearing network icon

Using 10.4 , Mac4Lin theme and Mobile Broadband. For the last few days the network icon in the system tray (which in Mac4Lin is either a phone receiver when off or a pylon when connected) sometimes changes to a plain square with vertical stripes. This means I cant connect or disconnect without logging out or restarting. Any ideas?

I think I solved this. The Gnome Panel was on the left of the screen. I have found that some icons will not work or display properly if the panel is somewhere other than at the TOP of the screen. Since I moved panel to the top it has not mis-behaved.
