View Full Version : [ubuntu] Unable to mount root fs on unknown

I get this error when I try to start up my Ubuntu (dual boot):

Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (8,2)

and then it says some more **** underneath that I don't remember.

This happened after I tried to automatically install to 10.04 (damn 10.04).

Sorry, I have actually seen this type of thread on the forum a couple days ago...but can't find it.

Also, I am not too computer savvy. I googled this stuff and while there are plenty of sources to find solutions, I can't understand a lot of what they're saying, so if you could please dumb it down for me and explain things step-by-step, that would be fantastic.

I appreciate it a lot.

Welcome to the forum mayyang.

Just to get more info, are you attempting to dual boot, or installing ubuntu by itself?

Thanks for your reply.

I have dual booted. I had Kosmic Koala working fine for a couple months, then when I had to update it and I had the option to update to 10.04, I got the problem I have now.

Upgrades can turn bad.

The very easiest solution is a fresh install.

You can use the live ubuntu CD to edit partitions.

The way you do it will depend on what you wish to do.

---Reinstall ubuntu in a dual boot.

---Reclaim the disk space for windows.

If the second, you need to fix the master boot record for windows to boot.

Post back when you decide which option you would like to do.

I think I would prefer the first option.
