I mainly use Windows 7, but I installed Ubuntu (via wubi) some time ago and booted into Ubuntu every now and then.
A couple of days ago I decided t move to Ubuntu and upgraded to 10.04, but now all I can get from my PC is a error when I start it. It just loads some sort of grub rescue terminal and there's nothing I can do about it.

Please, help me. I want to my data back.

First of all, if you want to keep using ubuntu properly, boot into win7 and remove wubi (after getting your data out). Wubi was never meant to be a long term install, just a quick try.

Right now you have few things to fix, but it would be even easier to fix if you had proper ubuntu, not wubi.

OK...
1. Get a 10.04 ubuntu desktop cd. Use it to load live mode, or Try Ubuntu option. That will load ubuntu running from the cd.

2. Then use these instructions to fix partition #1 on disk /dev/sda:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector

3. Open terminal and install generic MBR on /dev/sda with:

sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr

Ignore the warnings it will give.

After this restart and you should be able to boot into win7. You have the same error on partition #2 but I think you can get by without fixing it too. Lets see.
If needed, run step 2 for partition #2 also.

Once you can boot into win7 and access wubi, get your data out and think about installing proper ubuntu.

If you have questions about that, just ask.

Sorry to hear that you got such a bad start when switching to ubuntu!

The error is obviously caused by the upgrader, which isn't always flawless. Upgrading an OS is never completely safe, I guess.

To get your files back:
Boot from an ubuntu live cd. Mount the windows partion (can be found under Places to the top left) and copy them to a cd/dvd/usb/external hard drive.

To get you system working:
Either you can repair your windows system darkods way, or you can just wipe the entire hard drive and install windows (if you still want it) and then ubuntu on a second partition.

It is much safer to install ubuntu on a separate partition, and it is not very complicated. All you need to do is to burn an ubuntu live cd (which you have to do anyway) and choose dual boot in the installer.
