Solved by using boot options acpi=off noapic nolapic and two options listed between EDD=ON and Free Software Only that are not listed on the screenshot at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions and not currently available while I work on a shutdown/startup problem.
Testing 10.04 from the downloaded/burned CD works fine. I can run anything on the CD and use any data files.
Installation seems to work fine (acpi=off noapic nolapic), the desktop appears, and I can use the keyboard and mouse . . . until I left click on something.
Right clicking the desktop gets the contest menu, choosing something from it gets a black screen.
Left clicking Applications gets a black screen.
NEW: Left clicking on Applications, then left clicking on the Desktop gets a blank screen.
With 10.04, I get these error message before setting boot options or logging in:
NEW init: ureadahea main process (273) terminated with status 5
acer-wmi: no or unsupported wmi interface, unable to load
NEW the messages appear in this order, one right after the other.
Reports i've found that seem similar involve nvidia or intel graphics boards, which do not apply here (I think?): lspci & dmesg results below.
I've been running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on an
Acer Travelmate 8003 LMI
166 GB ix86
2 GB ram
60 GB hard drive
with no problems.
