All I want to do is install Java so I can run a game platform. And of course IT'S NOT WORKING!!!!! Can someone please help before I completly lose my mind? thanks.

Go to the Software Center (last item in the Applications Menu)

search for "JRE" without the quotes....

You want to install the package "OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime"

If that doesn't work, come back and we will help further

Welcome to the forum, just keep in mind commands are run in the terminal and your password will not be displayed when you enter it just type it in and hit enter when needed.
Applications > Accessories > Terminal
And Synaptic is
System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager

There are 2 ways to go. The first is removing openjdk and the other is have both sun and openjdk installed and setting it to use the sun version. Since I've already covered both ways I'll just link to them. Don't let the title of the second one throw you off it is what I said.

First removing openjdk and installing suns version

Having both installed and setting it to use the sun version

Each has their reason for doing it that way, for one removing openjdk would remove other things that it shouldn't have so having both installed was the way to go in that case.
