how to adjust brightness permanently ?

hi all,
this seemed to be a minor issue but has become quite an irritant of late.
every time i log into ubuntu, the i need to adjust the brightness applet to the settings i am comfortable with.
i vaguely remember that in U 8.10 the applet would remember the settings and did not need to be adjusted with every restart.
so what's happening here ? and how can i set the applet so i don't have to do it every time i boot my laptop ?

I don't know if this will help your situation, but I found that adjusting the brightness during the boot up using the keyboard did the trick for me. You need to do it quick though!:)
