There are more things than just supporting Open-Source.

considering how pro- MS the previous government, this could be interesting. But still Open source needs to be adopted wisely than being rammed into the throat of users.

Unfortunately MS is completely dominating the NHS both South and North, the amount of money that could have been saved ! Too late to roll things back here. Glad to hear about the commitment against the worst excesse of the digital economy act !

Most UK government departments are still running Windows XP. It's simple and it works. In the short term moving to Open source would actually cost alot of money in retraining and would confuse alot of people. The already paid for licenses would go to waste. There would also be issues with Macros and VBA solutions.

In the long run though I believe it would save money if the UK government made a gradual shift to open source solutions. Right now there is no suitable replacement for Outlook/exchange and that is a serious issue. Outlook is absoultely key to computing in the corporate environment.

To highlight part of the article which is relevant to your post

That document condemned, as its first point, "website-blocking and disconnecting Internet connections as a response to copyright infringement," and it trashed the Digital Economy bill "for focusing on illegal file-sharing rather than on nurturing creativity."

The document supported "the principle of net neutrality, through which all content, sites and platforms are treated equally by user access networks participating in the Internet."

Most of these policies sound like good ones, though talk is easy enough; execution may prove more difficult. Still, it's a reminder that conservatives and liberals can find common ground on issues surrounding privacy, open-source software in government, the need for universal broadband, and the importance of open government data.

the only comment I have about this is

Some of this occurred because of stitched up deals of past politics the BBC and Microsoft ; to highlight ,BBC iplayer . and also plans for the dilution of the TV licensing revenues where by part of the revenues would shared with to other broadcasting companies .
