hi there,
i'm from Slovakia and everyday i hear people saying, that we are small country and we can't make a good music or a good movie. in fact, Slovakia is a post-communistic country, but it's 20 years now, since we are independent county. and in fact, Slovakia is not in east Europe, it's in middle of Europe
so i'd like to know, what do you think about this song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Dep3JW02lg and what do you think about my country, how would you describe it [if you know it]and how would you describe your country, what do you want us to know about your culture.

Love Slovakia, and Slovak music! I mostly like the folk-influenced stuff - anything from Slnko records, and especially these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfYO-z0ytmY

There are some jewels hiding in the mud. :) Longital were live on Radio FM recently, and I think Soňa Horňáková still has her show on Slovensky Rozhlas.

yes, but national Slovensky rozhlas can't compete to commercial stations. Many people listen to Radio FM, whitch is part of Slovensky rozhlas, but it's till just a small part of country. Most people listen do Fun Radio or Radio Express. I would bet you, that less tham 20% of Slovak people know Soňa Horňáková :)

I like both songs in this thread. Both are pretty good quality recordings. I think the 2nd song is a style I would enjoy more.

i have to note, that most of people who know what they are listening are searching abroad, like USA, France, GB. They say, that we don't have as good artists as for example Muse, Pendulum, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto etc, or they are searching for stuff like movie soundtracks or japanese music. That's why artists in my country don't earn money just from making music, they often do other stuff, like teaching English

My grandmother was from Czechoslavakia when it was still a country, so I'm Czech, but I don't speak the language or anything. :)

Around here, the word "gaga" is slang for excrement...

much more famous people comes from Slovakia, for example Andy Warhol, the famous pop-art artist, or Jozef Kaban, he's responsible for new look of Audi and Skoda vehicles, or a writer Karel Capek, who invented the "robot" word, it's from Slovak word "robota" whitch means work

I can name a couple but, unfortunately, they are both sports-related:

much more famous people comes from Slovakia
Marek Hamsik anyone? I don't personally support him (he always played for teams I don't like) but he's probably a guy to keep an eye onto in the upcoming World Cup.
Probably, by now, I think he's the most famous (contemporary) Slovak person around.

Anyway there's a Slovak person I support from quite 10 years, and it's Danka Hantuchova (even if she's unfortunately not in the best period of her career :().
Sha may not be as famous as Hamsik but she used to be superb. Hope someday she'll be back to the wonder she was in the first half of 2000's.
