View Full Version : Macs have been replaced with HPs in "Sex and the City 2"

Just as New York City was its own character on the HBO series and in the first "Sex and the City" movie, so was Carrie Bradshaw's Mac computer. Carrie's laptop, with its instantly recognizable Apple logo, was shown in nearly every episode of the series, and often seemed to represent her career as a writer, and with it, her independence. In fact, one episode even centered around a laptop wipeout and a replacement MacBook.

But Carrie and Mac are no more, at least for the latest iteration of the "Sex and the City" franchise: because of a deal with Hewlett-Packard, only HP computers will be shown in "Sex and the City 2"...

Apple used to freely hand out powerbooks on studio sets. That's how they ended up in so many movies and TV programs. It's not rocket science. After a season, the director assistants would take them home and use them.

I guess Apple doesn't need the marketing push anymore.

I'm sure Apple has a patent for product placement of computers in popular media that it can throw around.

I have read many posts on this forum.

Posts about everything from file system debates (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1483963) to MMORPGs (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1483690) to black and white cell phones (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1487271) to house fires (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1484632) to what side people's hair is parted on (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1465288) to asking for help for a baby squirrel (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1434046)!!! Everything I could imagine seeing.

But never, ever, in a thousand years, in my wildest dreams, in my most outlandish ponderings, would I ever even consider the idea that I would see a post about Sex and the City on Ubuntu Forums.

Now I've seen it all. Nothing in the universe will ever surprise me again...

t'is a sad day for sure.

And it is COMPUTER RELATED. That's what really gets me. It's perfectly within the scope of these forums. There is nothing wrong with it being here, but it just feels so out of place...

I am actually shocked.
Nothing says "Upscale New York Power Chick (that can't keep a guy to save her life) like an Apple computer. HP just doesn't cut it.
Any shred of credibility and realism that SITC had for me is now gone. It might as well be fiction with women who b*tch too much about men now.

Like I said, it's a perfectly valid topic. I just never expected that Sex and the City would be discussed on Ubuntu Forums.

On the entire site, the exact phrase "Sex and the City" has only occurred in four threads. Two of which (this one and one I made relating back to this one) were made today. The others two were about DVD watching and TV tuning.

My search: http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php?searchid=73163561

For comparison, the phrase "Star Trek" has occurred in over 250 threads (plus this one now...) http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php?searchid=73163599 (Honestly, I expected more)

Why not? Other movies and TV programmes get discussed.

I always was a bit annoyed when I saw Macs in media. I notice them abusively on House MD as well. My preference is a middle of the road hardware vendor and my own choice of software. :)

Agreed. Macs hold a disproportionate share of the TV show market and I also get annoyed. Are Dell, HP, Asus, Gateway, etc. computers really that unattractive that the prop guys feel only Macs can be used? I don't think my laptop is that ugly...

I'm glad that HP made this deal. I probably won't see the movie (no one in my house watches Sex and the City) but I still think it's a good thing.

Its just part of the advertising budgets people.

Heck I seldon notice them. It wasn't until some mention it here that I notice what type of Laptops they used on Big Bang Theory. And thats after watching for 2 years

Apple pays to put their products on screen, just like any other brand. They probably just have a bigger budget for it than others.

I did notice Windows being very obviously pimped on an episode of Bones last night though.

You expect to see a guy with a suit and a tie who probably enjoys Excel as much as regular people enjoy video games use HP gear. Nothing screams rigid businessman like HP. I can't imagine Carrie with a HP on her lap. It's just... I can't wrap my head around it. :D

So there you go. Oh and think of the show what you will but the movies are CRAP.

Also Cameron from House uses the same lappy my wife does (at least in season 1, I see her with a Dell D600). :P

The one that kind of upset me the most was when they started using Macs on 24. Macs are known for being user friendly, uncustomizable, and very proprietary. They're not really known for being a technical hacker computer like they need on 24.
