This may be a stupid question, but I do not know the answer. Within a given release, say 10.04, is it necessary to periodically create a new live cd to keep things current? I will be using a usb stick to install Ubuntu on new machines over the next year and wondered how things are kept current.

No you can keep using the same CD. Just check for updates after you load it on a new computer. :)

Assuming you are doing this for a customer base, "new machines over the next year"
I would say it's up to the owners of said machines to know to run a simple update every week or so. :)

EDIT: Plus, what wojox said! :)

For Long Term Support releases (like 10.04) Canonical releases a new Live CD once or twice a year including all updates to that point. These will be named 10.04.1, 10.04.2, etc. For example, Hardy is currently up to 8.04.3 I believe.
