I installed 10.04 fresh on a system, and it worked fine, graphics loaded correctly, X was happy.
After running apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade, it still seemed to work, but after a few reboots it goes into "Low Graphics Mode" and refuses to come out.
None of the choices offered actually do anything useful; all I can get is a command prompt.
root@clientdisplay0018:~# service gdm restart
restart: Unknown instance:
doesn't do anything. startx runs, but seems to use fb. My video card is a simple 82G35:
root@clientdisplay0018:~# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82G35 Express DRAM Controller (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82G35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
The same exact hardware works fine in 8.04, and works with 10.04 right after install from the ISO. I'm not sure what is making X think it has to go into failsafe mode; as far as I can tell there are no logs on when it decides to do that.
I reported this similar bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/563191
but this is not an NVidia system, it's a simple Intel one. Perhaps the problem is elsewhere?
