problems with 10.04 programs

hi, I'm a new user to Ubuntu, I've got 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx I think is the name. Anyway so far it's awesome, I've just had a few weird problems like problems loading certain programs or sound doing echo clicks or something in other programs. I uninstalled F-spot because it just won't open, and then reinstalled it and it still does the same thing, so I dont know if this is a major problem or if I just need to use a different program. If anyone can give me any tips or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

yes, I have done an update actually, and now everyonce and a while when the computer wakes up from hibernation I dont have control over volume or my wi-fi unless I restart. also, I'm unable to control my laptops screen brightness. oh, and for some reason just now my keyboard stopped working after using firefox, maybe the site I was at had something to do with it....anyway, as usual any advice is appreciated.
