But I do enjoy using nano as well.

Scribes, (http://scribes.sf.net) actually. Modern and nice, has the snippets [I don't run dapper]. Not mature though but it will be great.

I use it for python and c programming as well as random note taking

kate for long-term edits, kwrite for medium, and nano for 10-second jobbies :)

gedit and nano. Mostly gedit since I love syntax highlighting. I used to use jed, but since nano is installed by default I switched to that. I'd like to learn vi too, only that I really don't need any of those things it does better than nano.

edit: I have tried emacs too. It took me so long to find out how to close the damn thing that I haven't tried it again :D

Where's the poll option for Nano?

mines gedit. i like an application to just focus on the job in hand. editors like emacs and vi/vim just leave me cold.

Nano here too, now. It's funny, I went from RedHat 9 to RH-EN and couldn't figure out why pico no longer worked.

I even went as far as to copy the binaries into my new system, and used them that way. It was only after installing Ubuntu (2 years later) and seeing this 'nano' mentioned in some how-to's, that I realized it hadn't really dissapeared.

GNU Emacs and sometimes gedit

I'm also a vi man. :)

It may take a while to get used to, but once you do get used to it, it's very fast and easy. My favourite part (and the one that I hated most of all at first) is the usage of hjkl instead of the arrow keys.

I always use nedit for programming but it looks really ugly in ubuntu.
For non-programming i use gedit, it is enough.

If I'm working at the command line, I use nano. I don't like opening all sorts of windows. Otherwise I use gedit.

Vi is the most popular editer for a reason even tho it is clunky at first ](*,) but vi is the most efishont editor. vim removed all its shortcomings and is very simple wonce you know the modes. vi's poer comes from this quirk and vi is the most powerful editor on earth!!! vi the ubicuitus editor

True, I took a hour or two to learn the basics and now I love it (though I usually use gvim). Scribes looks to be promising and looks to fill the whole left from leaving textmate (such a nice editor). Vim is not pretty but effective. Emacs is horrible though (atleast for me) their is just to much going on it IS a OS.

To be fair though Emacs is an entire OS, its just lacking a good text editor ;) .

vi for doing quick edits

emacs/latex or OpenOffice for word processing

gedit for quick edits that involves copypasting a lot between windows (emacs is not good at this, and vi not very suited for it either since I usually run it from a terminal).

I mostly use gvim, and scribes on occasion. Emacs looks cool but I loove my vim. I want to check out jedit but their are some problems with that.

Kate -- I just love it! All the features, and seems perfect for any kind of programming language -- highlighting, indentation, integrated Konsole and much much more. It just rocks! This and Amarok are two of my most loved KDE applications.
