Card Slot not Recognised

I have an Acer Aspire ONE Netbook, the original Linpus (Redhat) is installed on the SSD and I run Ubuntu URM as my main system from a USB stick.

The Acer has a memory expansion slot where an SD card can be used to increase the built in SSD drive, it also has a card reader.

Both of these slots work fine when Linpus is booted by neither are recognised when 9.10 or 10.04 is booted.

I have tried an SD card in both slots and then started gparted, no joy.

What could be the reason for this, obviously the hardware is fine as Linpus sees it.
