I posted in the other shutdown issues thread (http://wwww.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1466589), but most of the posters there have a different issue, including the OP; thus, the thread title now has prefix "solved" even though many people like myself are still stuck.

The problem is that when one shuts down, the computer just restarts instead. This problem occurs even when you shut down the following ways

Shut down through the GUI
Shut down via command line, example "# shutdown -p now", "# poweroff" or "# halt"
Using SysRq key

A bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/552316) for this issue has been filed, but I don't know if it's getting much attention (it was started a few months back).

Anyone have any suggestion?

Thanks for all the help!!
