View Full Version : Blank screen on Lucid upgrade (Thinkpad R50e)

I've recently upgraded my Karmic install to Lucid on a Thinkpad R50e laptop using the Update Manager->Upgrade option. When I boot up and select any kernel from Grub, I see the usual Ubuntu splash screen (or all the scrolling text if I remove the 'splash' option), followed by a blank screen. The laptop still appears to be on (fan is working etc.) but nothing I do produces a response (Ctrl-Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get another terminal etc.), the only option is to hold down the power button until the laptop switches off.

I have tried all the following solutions found from searches from a root console with networking enabled:

Moving xorg.conf to xorg.conf.bak
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
aptitude update && aptitude upgrade

I've also tried the following options in grub:

Adding i915.modeset=1 to the kernel line in grub
Adding i915.modeset=0 to the kernel line in grub
Adding i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa to the kernel line in grub

I have also tried connecting an external monitor, just to make sure that it wasn't the laptop screen at fault, but the results are the same. Booting into XP (the machine dual-boots) works fine.

Is there anything else which I can try? I am starting to get a bit worried now, as this is my primary development machine and I really need it to work by Monday morning...

Information about my graphics card:

lspci | VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)

After a bit more searching, I managed to find this (I didn't know that I had an '8xx' card, but I'm guessing that's what the /855GM part of the lspci output means):

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

Workaround A seems to have solved the problem for me, suppose it is about time I bought a new laptop if this is always going to be a problem. :(

Actually, Workaround A doesn't fix the problem, it allows me to boot, but then after 30-60 minutes Ubuntu will simply crash out into what looks like the output of dmesg and then the screen goes blank again.

Appears to be hardware problem...overheating.

How about -

tail -f /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature > ~/Desktop/out

This will create a file on your desktop showing the changes in temperature, so after the hard crash, you can view the latest temperature change.

Open /var/log, there should be 2 files dmesg and dmesg.0, post contents of the latter.

And, how about running a memtest?

I'm not sure why it would be a hardware problem or overheating, everything was fine until I upgraded to Lucid last night. I have used Workaround B which seems to have fixed the problem for the moment, it does mean that I can no longer play DVDs or games but I can't afford to have a machine randomly crashing on me.

Last CPU temperature at the moment is: 51C, I have left the tail command running in case it crashes again.

/var/log/dmesg.0 contains:

Had exactly the same problem with my Dad's R50e. I should have been warned off by the lucid iso booting into a blank screen, but I nonetheless upgraded from karmic.

I attempted workaround A, which, as you also noticed allows booting to the desktop, but doesn't do video. I tried othef workarounds, including quite a convoluted one, but the only thing that worked was booting to .31 rather than .32 kernel.

Really annoying - I hope it gets sorted in a later kernel. I just don't understand how things can break like this on upgrade, but then I suppose I simply shouldn't have upgraded!

what has happening if you upgrade to ubuntu maverick ?

hiiii
i'm very new to ubuntu and it's my first time using Linux
i'm using R50e and i have the same problem
and i tried this

on setup i used boot editing by pressing e
and add this line to boot option i915.modeset=1
then after finishing ubuntu installation i found the i must do this everytime i boot
so i searched and found this workaround ushing 2 commands

- echo options i915 modeset=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf
- sudo update-initramfs -u

and it worked for me

but i cant play videos and i cant play mp3 files .
i run update manager and i updated and no hope
so is there any solution .. and if not .. which version of Linux i must use to run in peace ?

I think it's still a problem. The only proper solution appears to use a different kernel version number. So you could try selecting the 3rd option down on your boot-up, or waiting for Maverick in October.

Bit disappointing for an LTS release.
