View Full Version : Woo!! I might install Ubuntu on My sister's laptop! :D

TheNerdAL

I told her "You should install Ubuntu." And she said she might because I am bothering her about it, lol.

She mostly uses it for internet and Microsoft Word but Open Office can export in MS Word files.

So I might install it when my 10.04 CD's come in the mail.

Anyone got any tips for my first conversion maybe?

Yes.
Don't force the issue. If she get's frustrated, keep in mind that it's new to her.
Don't do a complete install right away. Try it on her hardware running the LiveCD.
Let her test the LiveCD or even your computer for a few days first to see if she can/wants (key word) to get used to it.

Before installing it run the live CD first to see if all applications and desktop run without problems on the laptop.

Backup all files you want (your sister) wants to keep.

Don't do it. She'll blame you for every little problem she has. Just tell her all the hip people use it, and then make her beg you to install it.

This really is key.
Do not force, under any circumstance, she's the one who's using the computer, and she needs to feel 'at home' with it.

I -as a rule- never install Linux on peoples computers, ever.
What I do instead is give them a live cd, and if they want, try it out.

Well, the layout of MS Office files changes when you open them with Open office. So you should keep the MS Office CD near you if this turns out to be an issue for her.
It doesn't work 100% on wine but if she doesn't do anything too complex, it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, try to explain her that Ubuntu works in a very different way than Windows and to help her get familiar with it. I know this is a generalization, but most of the women I know tend to take more time to learn how to work with new programs, so try to help her so that she doesn't demoralise.

If she really doesn't like it, don't insist, just put Windows back on.

Cheers

I am going to have Ubuntu on a Partition and yeah I am going to put the LiveCD in and tell her to try it and see if she feels comfortable.

Earlier he quoted her saying he was bothering her (if you look, you'll see that).

My second comment was intended to be a joke, saying, "If she's attractive, go ahead and put linux on her machine" (because then we'd have to help her).

Sorry I had to explain that.

Be very sure that this is what she wants.
Make sure you back up everything important to her.
Run a LiveCD to test out the hardware.
and everything else I said earlier.
