View Full Version : How do I get audio from my netbook to display on my tv?

i want to hook it up to my tv via vga. is there a separate cable i can get to play the sound through my tv speakers?

Yes, you'll need a separate cable, VGA/RGB only transmits video. Unlike HDMI which transmits both audio and video.

Your computer probably has a 3.5mm jack for audio like headphones and such, if your TV has a compatible audio-in jack of that format you could just get a simple 3.5mm audio cable, it's pretty common to find in a retail store, and some can be as low as $10. If that doesn't work, or you don't have one, what other ports do you have available to use?

I think it should work, but part of it depends on how the TV can handle the sources.

For example, if the TV can show the video from the VGA, does it also output the audio from the RCA or audio jack source? Most likely it can and will, but we'll need to know about the TV before we could even provide an actual answer... if we're even able to.
