Is there a way to burn an iso in brasero that is to large for one disc and have it carry over to a second or third disk??

Are you sure that it is too big - I thought I had the same issue - but it was in fact where the size was being reported differently.
But if the iso is in fact bigger than a cd you'll need to use a dvd

No doubt about it. The total file size is about 12 gigs. I'm using DVDrw's So it would probably take three

Yea - certainly too big for a cd
Might be good to put that sort of info in a first post then I'd not have answered at all.
What iso is it? Might be some help wherever it came from.

Its an image copy of my total system. I thought it would be a good way to save all the info and be able to restore the whole system including apps and data.

Possibly you'd be better looking here - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem/TAR
and split the tar either before or after creating it
