Ubuntu Desktop Icons Lost and no right click

I lost all my desktop icons..
no right click.
not able to open any of my folders under /home.

tried running sudo nautilus (it opens a window and am able to find everything there). but when i close the terminal.. Gone.. bhoooooom... back to square one...

tried running Alt+f2 nautilus and nautilus & but of no use..

checked in gconf-editor .. value of show desktop is set as true.

Can anyone please help.
am not able to use any of my appilication when i run with sudo nautilus.

Be sure to run nautilus as your user, not as root and kill any nautilus instances before running it again I guess :o
