my last laptop was a gateway and i really loved it

look into the NV series usually pretty cheap and around 3-4GB ram 320GB HDD and a decent graphics card for $500-700

my gateway however broke down pretty quick (not sure if it was a one in a million faulty machine or if all gateways are faulty) but luckily had extended warrenty (also i could've broke down pretty quick since i was playing Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead and HoN constantly on it)

WOW laptops are expensive now. When I looked last time, March of '09, they had some very decent ones, almost exact same specs for 2-300.

Actually the cost has not gone up; the value of your currency has gone down. Anyway, what range were you looking for?

I bought yesterday a Toshiba Satellite L500 Laptop with 500Gb hard drive and Intel Dual Core 2.20GHz. It has 2Gb Ram, Intel Video chipset and Realtek wireless.

I installed Ubuntu 10.4 64bit on it and it works perfectly.

Sound, wireless (after updating), sleep everything I have tried so far works beautifully and looks beautiful.

If you're willing to get a used computer, eBay has some good prices. Otherwise, I would suggest getting the discounted new one for the hundred dollars or so more.

I'm a big fan of System 76 and Dell laptops. Dell has relatively good support for Linux (Ubuntu in particular) for a mainstream OEM.

I know cheap is the operative, so this is off-topic.

I've never been a big Apple fan.

However, the MacBook Pro is a jump in portable computing not seen since the ThinkPad.

By far the most superior product on the market. Yes, $1200 is a lot of dough. But it puts my $2400 maxed out dv8 to shame. It's just a much better thought out notebook.

It's easier to use. The battery lasts forever. It stays cooler. It's quiet. Everything works. No crapwear. Easy to use multimedia apps that are best-in-class. Better technology on the touchpad (wow), better thought out power supply. Lighter. Easier to carry.

To put it in perspective, the dv8 has a SSD, Win7 Pro, 8gb, and a i7 Quad chip. On paper it should be the fastest notebook out there. Nope. The Mac boots faster, loads apps faster, and shuts down faster.

And it's armored. The whole case is machined aluminum. It has a real man-sized keyboard too.

An impressive jump in usefulness in portable computing.

I've got 6 Dell notebooks, and all still run. Even in harse conditions. Out of the normal notebooks, IMO, they are the best.

Avoid: Acer, HP, Compaq, Sony. I've yet to have any of those last 3 years without problem.

I've had issues with my wireless on my dell mini 9. Broadcom b43 which required a lot of work to get working.

And to whoever is complaining of price: Have you been to Australia? Thank god you don't need to but over here!

The issue is software; stick Ubuntu on both then compare

Oh, absolutely the HP dv8 is far faster hardware. No doubt.

But if I had to use a computer daily in a mobile environment to feed my family, today my choice would be the MacBook Pro. It's really that good. I hate Apple. I hated the AppleII back in the 1970's with their dumb integer BASIC. It only became useful when Micro-soft (hyphenated, from New Mexico?) put a decent programming language on it.

From what I see today, neither Windows or Linux offers a complete solution. In the hotrod realm I call them "box of parts" solutions. Grab a bunch of mismatched parts and bolt them together then add up the stickers. 50HP + 25HP + 30HP + 10HP doesn't ever equal 115HP, but it can run worse than before you started. The MacBook is integrated in a way that MS has never approached or even made an attempt at.

Everyone would like to think that Xerox PARC made the desktop GUI first. I still own a Xerox desktop computer from that era. There's no GUI on it. Xerox 820 with 8" drives. Mine was made in 1984. This was when the MAC was released.

Truth is, Xerox did not figure out how to put a GUI on a retail desktop computer. Their computers did not have that feature. Yes, they could make it work in a Lab, but their retail computers did not have it.

Now what is the point? Uh, well, OH YEAH!! Apple has always focused on usability as the prime objective. The MacBook Pro shows that better than any product Apple has released to date. I own a lot of notebooks, and have used them since the Kaypro days. The Mac will certainly be copied.

What's better a mac mini or a quad core shack-a-mac?

A Mac Mini Server sounds interesting. $999 preconfigured server for small businesses includes the Snow Leopard Server O/S.

That is where I was going to go originally until I had a hard time making the MacBook talk to the Win machines on the LAN.

So when that didn't work, I revisited Linux. Ubuntu in particular. It would talk to the PC's. Problem solved. I'm not switching to Linux for religious reasons. My PC's were fighting each other, and MS Small Business Server doesn't make any sense. I was actually warned against it privately by a MS employee.
