It looks good but how we be certain it is not running any malicious code as this remastersys is not endorsed by Canonical or such?

Very , very nice.... I am downloading my copy right now and will be testing it out once the download is done. I love the color scheme from the picture and it looks very polished, but Lucid is a very polished release as it it.

I shell give it to my oldest daughter to also test and run on her main system for I can get a better idea of how well it works for the average teenager. Sweet:guitar:

The same way you know canonical hasn't put any malicious code in ubuntu, check the source code. Assuming this distro remains compliant with the GPL the source code must be available as well. If you don't have the knowledge to review the code yourself then you'll have to trust others to review it for you or trust that the code is safe. You can't trust code from any source, especially a large corporation, since they actually have *more* incentive to put in malicious code that benefits them, but doesn't benefit you.

A couple of those packages look like the commercial versions on the list like Real Player and Sun Virtual Box and may need a distribution agreement. Don't know they'd find out or even really care, but you might want to look into the open source versions for bundling instead.

May 14th, 2010, 08:16 PM
Bravo; it looks very pretty but I think Ubuntu-Tweak shold be bundled, personally. It looks like a simple remix job by someone who actually is relatively new to Linux (correct me if I erred there) but that does not mean at all it is don poorly. My sister wants to try some gnome Distro Besides "Regular Ubuntu" and I think this is a good candidate.

I jump up there every once in a while but it's hanging around 50 to 70 KB/s. I normally download at around 800KB/s , I have the bandwidth , are there any settings in transmission I need to change perhaps? I rarely use torrents anymore because I have an account with megaupload.

ubunterooster
May 15th, 2010, 01:13 AM
Well you can LIMIT upload or download but I don't know how to boost it. I lowered my download and it seems to be doing more upload. I rarely use torrent so Idk that nuch about it.

bigsmitty64
May 15th, 2010, 01:17 AM
Downloading from 1 of 6 peers, @ 1.0 KB/s

I left the download limit unticked. So it shouldn't be limited, I think. OH well, I got all night. :)

Just a suggestion, not a critique:

Couldn't you just make an installer package (SH) for this rather than remaster the distro.

O.K. , So far, this looks pretty awesome. I cannot give it a complete run down now cause I have to go out for a bit, but man this looks excellent! 0 problems at install, loads fast, looks....o.k. (hehe) ya, I may tweak the theme a bit but anyone will do that. I also like what was done with the top panel layout.

And it's LOADED with stuff. Some may say, stuff you may not need, I say stuff I might not have tried otherwise! If I don't like it, it can be removed quick enough. I'll definately be playing around with it tonight and I'll update if I find any buggy stuff or random weirdness goin on! Thanks for this one brutha!

uhh, chronologically coming first doesn't imply superiority. I think you grossly underestimate what ubuntu has done for linux. It may be based off debian, but its given linux A LOT MORE than Debian has by itself. To put an independently supported spinoff consisting of mainly cosmetic and default app install differences in the came category as the effort that went into ubuntu isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison.

I agree with Phrea, its just a fun independent remix of an already great distro.

Sorry, I have been playing around with the Install and forgot to open the torrent back up for seeding. I will do that. I like it so far.
I haven't found any real issues at all, just a couple programs I didn't really have a need for (muslim prayer guide?) easily removed.

And one complaint...... 0 GAMES! Not a HUGE gamer but I'd like a few outta the box.

Tons of themes and utilities though. Maybe a tiny bit sluggish compaired to my normal Lucid install. But it's LOADED at start up. More later.................

Oh, and make sure you leave it some room to breathe, gparted reports 11 gigs used after fresh install.

I downloaded yesterday and let Transmission run all night (last night), so you should have had more than one seeder? Unfortunately, my upload speed is marginal. Are you still trying to download?

Torrent works now for CD yea! To bad not really any seeders. And direct download flows at 15-16kb *sighs*

You could try setting up a account with pinghoster they provide unlimited BW and space and its free? Plus I think download speeds would be higher then 20kbs a second for direct downloads.

EDIT: Nvm number 10 in there agreement:

You may not use your web space for 'data warehousing' that is, using our space as storage for large files which are only linked from other sites

Other than gaining users, I don't really see what Ubuntu has done for Linux. I guess developing upstart.

I see.. Go install Redhat 5.2 and be enlightened... I've used linux since then and even before, and have never seen such steady progress towards ease of install and ease of use as I have with ubuntu. Those who don't see that, don't know any better. I'm not saying everyone should, but perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to defame the accomplishments ubuntu has made just because you are unaware of what linux was like a decade before all the way up until ubuntu came around.

Do I have issues with some of the decisions as of late with the distro, yes, I make no secret about that. However, I'm not about to throw everything ubuntu did do right out of the window..

By the way, bringing users also means bringing FOSS awareness and bringing development. So, when you say, "oh, besides users, ubuntu hasn't done anything for linux." Um, bringing users was DIRELY needed to get the momentum FOSS/Linux has behind it today. If you looked at nothing else but sheer exposure of linux and FOSS development since 2005, what ubuntu has done is monumental to linux development, and no other distro has been more successful at recruiting users and FOSS developers and testers. Not Debian, Not Redhat, Not SuSE. None of them!
