Hello everyone,

I am interested in downloading ubuntu 10.04 on a cd for a friend. I want to use a torrent to get the file so I can seed after the download. When I go to the alternate download page located here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors

It gives me multiple options on which torrent to download:
ubuntu-10.04-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-server-amd64.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-server-i386.iso.torrent

I am confused as to which I should download. I know that amd64 is for the amd architecture and i386 is for intel, but what is the difference between alternate and desktop?
Thank you.

Alternate comes with everything and you must upgrade still after installing.

Desktop is smaller and quicker and you must upgrade still after installing.

Try the mini.iso https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

It will install everything up to date from the repo's.

What type Architecture does he run? 64 or 32 bit processor.

If he has an Intel 64 bit you can still download the AMD version

What do you mean by "Alternate comes with everything". How exactly is it different from the desktop version?

Also, I never knew there was a mini.iso. Does this make the installation time a lot longer because it has to download all the files needed during the installation and is it as reliable?

Also, I am almost certain he has an AMD chip and it is a fairly old computer so it is probably 32-bit.

The Alternate CD also allows more advanced installation options which are not available with the Standard LiveCD.
I think you can install it without a network connection.

The mini.iso is great. I use it all the time with every release. It's about the same time wise seeing tou have to reboot the LiveCD and upgrade.

I would download the 32 bit minimal CD. You can also install Mail Server, LAMP, OpenSSH Server K/X/Ubuntu desktop, Notebook editions.

If you go that way, when you reboot to install minimal CD, You will come to a prompt like this

boot: Just type in install and about half way through Taskel will open up and let you choose what environment you want.

The following link deals with dual/multi-boots but it includes examples of both Desktop CD installations and Alternate CD installations:

http://members.iinet.net/~herman546/index.html

Skip down to "Ubuntu 'Desktop CD' installation guides" and then down to "Ubuntu 'Alternate CD' installation guides".

What are the hardware specs of the computer you'll be installing on?

Will it be pure Ubuntu?

Or a dual-boot?

It will be purely ubuntu. It is an old computer, but it can run windows xp just fine. At least before my friend got malware on his computer. ****** pop ups everywhere. I do not think there is any need for the mobile remix.
