thanks for this helpful post.

i'm an EEE PC user planning an imminent move to Ubuntu Lucid/ Maverick & Debian Sid . .

i've put some work into my existing Ubuntu install based on 9.10 karmic nbr2 and am very happy with the results - full credit and thanks to all

i'm therefore hoping to be able to upgrade my machine rather than do a fresh install, tho i have by now got .iso's of my present install and backups( dumps ) of gconf.

managed to trash my panels a few days back and ended up rebuilding them
as gconf --load
and restoring my /.gconf had failed to do the trick of restoring. .

i suspect /.gconfd/saved_state may be the crucial stuff - any guidance would be welcome as i think i an easy and reliable way to snapshot and restore desktop configurations would be handy.

This question had nothing to do with the thread it was in, moved.

Hello cariboo907 -

Thanks for moving the post here- much more relevant for the gconf stuff.

actually i've had little problem with my panels. .and they're starting to be quite useful.

maybe i mis-pasted - it was late . .i wonder which forum/thread was it on as i forgot to subscribe . .
the thanks was directed to that thread. .and i may have some notes to contribute.
