while we wait for gimp monowindow

there are still a few tricks (http://blog.ibeentoubuntu.com/2008/09/is-gimp-giving-you-headache.html) you can use, like

Start the Gimp in it's own X-nested single window.

# apt-get install xnest metacity gimp
$ Xnest :1 -ac -name GIMP -geometry 1024x690 & metacity --display :1 & gimp --display :1

Now you're working all in one window.

yeap 1 window

never knew it was so easy lol

thanks ibeentoubuntu.com for the tricks ^^

ps> from the software center: "Use of the Xephyr X server instead of Xnest is recommended."

i wonder if it gets the same effect as xnest..

edit: i just noticed lucid does this automagically (combine 3 windows list in 1) ! forget this !

I don't see what the big fuss is about. You get the same effect by dedicating GIMP it's own workspace. Even the smallest WMs in Linux can do multiple workspaces.

For Windows it might be useful though.

I like the multi window. For one reason. When using a tutorial online, I can keep the browser open behind it and read along while editing my photo!

OMG i just noticed gimp in lucid , does the trick automagically !!!!

1 window list instead of 3 !!

hurray ! :guitar:

this is probably almost or just as good as having a monowindow

+100 to this, I like being able to look "over gimps shoulder" so to speak to see something on a webpage.

Could you please state which distribution it is. If its Lucid, is it KDE trinity and do you receive regular security updates and bug-fixes for KDE 3 even now?

In the interest of keeping this thread on topic, please take this conversation to PMs or a new thread.

Thank you.

nice trick.
im gradually learning gimp as i really find it easy to use inkscape than gimp as i can just freely draw or trace bitmap images.

You can use my trick. Make the gimp windows huge, and put them on three different desktops. Then enable desktop effects, and use the scroll thingy to go between the screens.
