View Full Version : [SOLVED] Problems with booting to XP after lucid upgrade

Hey. I recently upped to 10.04 (yay!), and for the first time I started having problems with Grub (not so yay!).

Particularly interesting because I had tried installing W7 on my Dell Precision340 before realizing I couldn't, then resorted to XP, but the Grub list still said Windows 7 while it booted to XP fine. (That was probably useless info..)

Then I upgraded Ubuntu to 10.04 and now, when I select Windows, it does nothing for a bit, then goes right back to the Grub list. Um, help please? I was wondering if there was a command line input to force it to go to the boot sector (it's on sda3), but I didn't find anything on that. I did find another post which suggested boot info script (link (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/)) from sourceforge.net. I ran it, followed the instructions, and heres RESULTS.TXT:

I also ran testdisk as said to from this page (link (http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector)), and it didn't work.

Oh, and after running testdisk, I ran boot info script again and the results were different:

The one thing different is sda3 under Boot Info Summary. It now looks okay, although when I tried booting to it after running testdisk, the same results happened.

Oh, and under the Drive/Partition Info, the only drive of interest is sda 80.0GB, the internal HD. sdb 500GB is an external HD, and sdc 2GB is a flash drive. Just not to cause much confusion.

sda2: __________________________________________________ _______________________

File system: ntfs
Boot sector type: Grub 2
Boot sector info: Grub 2 is installed in the boot sector of sda2 and
looks at sector 272447 of the same hard drive for
core.img, but core.img can not be found at this
location. No errors found in the Boot Parameter Block.
Operating System:
Boot files/dirs: /boot.ini /bootmgr /Boot/BCD /ntldr /NTDETECT.COM

Your windows boot files (at this moment both for XP and win7 because windows combines them when you have 2 versions) are on /dev/sda2 as it is clearly shown. Also, Grub2 is still installed on the partition /dev/sda2 which makes the problem.

Use the testdisk procedure again to fix /dev/sda2 partition and you should be fine.

Note: because windows combines bootloaders, probably grub2 will create one option in its menu called Win7, and that will pull up a windows menu to select 7 or XP as second step.

PS. I just noticed actually one of the 7 boot files is missing:
/boot.ini /ntldr and /ntdetect.com are for XP
win7/vista should have /bootmgr /boot/bcd and /winload.exe

You might need to repair your win7 booting process using your win7 dvd, instructions here if you need it:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708

Anyway, the first step is to use the testdisk procedure on /dev/sda2 (second partition on disk /dev/sda).

Hey thanks darkod. I'll try that.

I don't want to boot up to win7, just XP. win7 isn't compatible on my desktop as said so on the manufacturer's website. In fact, I had noticed that the menu item said "Windows 7 (dev/sda2)", showing the disk sector it was in.

Anyway, yeah, I'll run testdisk again, and see how that works. If it doesn't, I'll probably have to reinstall Grub, or reformat, or whatever it is, or if there's a way to edit the commands? Or a command line prompt to boot directly to sda3? Again, only if testdisk doesn't fix it again.

Well, crap! I ran testdisk, but under sda2 there wasn't the command "BackupBS" or whatever they said to select on the page (linked to from first thread), and it wasn't under sda3 either. I quit, restart, and Windows is no longer on the Grub list!!!!!!!!

Please tell me it's still recoverable (I can access the files by mounting the drive, and backing the files up to an external HD, so no worries there), because I am in the middle of a project that needs to be finished by the end of this month, and it can only be done on XP. Please!!!
