Howdy!
I must have read "ugly brown" on these forums a 1000 times since I started using ubuntu.

I like it though! Perhaps it was the way I was introduced to Ubuntu.
My sister-n-law got her laptop ate up with viruses a week after I had just reloaded it for her. She called me and when I said it would be a couple days till i could clear it out again she said she was getting a mac.

I was shocked as she is a broke college student but hey whatever floats your boat. I asked her why a mac...she said she cant handle all the viruses and she needs a reliable laptop for school.

I thought "man it sure would be nice to be immune to windows based viruses myself." Granted I have never got a virus but thats only because I am VERY cautious. I used to spend a lot of time on the dark side of the net (not porn....stealing) so I learned very quickly to be careful of what you download and install.

Anywho...I was at work when the thought occured so I said what the hell and did a search on "Fedora Vs" to see what other distros were like fedora as its the only one I have ever used in the past...although it proved to be a pain in the *** every time.

Fedora vs Ubuntu was the first one to come up so I went to the ubuntu website and read this.
http://www.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntustory
I read a part about the name...what it meant and why Ubuntu was named so.

Went home burned a disk...fired it up....
"Holy crap! Brown....why?" Then I thought....hummm Africa...the savannah....Giraffes, Lions, Tribes.....International Scouts....deserts.

The color scheme seemed fitting...after that I loved it. It felt....natural. More organic than other colors. In a time when everything is made out of or to look like plastic...even our flippen OSs...it was refreshing. When did plastic start looking cool to people?

I already know a lot of folks hate this color scheme, I have read it here, on reviews, vlogs, blogs, you name it!
I would like to hear (read) why other folks like it/miss it. I know I am not alone.

I miss the human themes....I think I am going to put them back on Lucid tonight. They can keep the black and purple.

This has been discussed a million times.

Up untill 10.04, I would have agreed that Ubuntu is ugly. I really thought the orange and brown was an eyesore. However, I think the new theme is very nice. Only issue is I don't think it's a very "neutral" colorscheme, so to speak. I mean the colors won't blend very well with the average wallpaper.

See all of this can be changed with other themes, so why the fuss? All of my taskbars are transparent and window colors are dark grey...window controls on the right :)

Now the plymouth themes could use some new additions...I really liked the old Ubuntu splash...but i can change those too to some degree.

Purple is more attractive and professional looking. Mix that with the speed improvements and we have a winner.

Sure some people liked the brown... but a majority of people have always though it was ugly.

You must not have read the post then. I didnt ask for more "I didnt like the brown" responses. Thanks for your input though.

No, I read it. Just the entire concept of "do you like the brown theme or not" has been discussed a number of times.

Amazing what you understand as opposed to actually read!

I read:

"I liked Brown, Anyone else?"

I thought this was referring to the UK elections and our EX PM and was preparing for this to be locked quicker than rumour about an iPhone 4g :)

On topic, didn't like the brown, always defaulted to more subtle shades.

I enjoy earth tones in fall.

I too liked the brown. It was different from every other OS, so welcoming, so I couldn't help but choose Ubuntu as my first (serious) Linux experience.

I thought the darker "chocolate" color in 9.10 was pretty good, but I didn't care for the orangey-brown before that.

The new theme is an improvement over 9.10, I think. :)

The theme from Ubuntu Karmic was my favorite one. It actually looked quite nice, compared to all other Gnome thmese I've seen. I dislike the black + purple theme... :(

I quite liked the modern retro 70's shirt feel of the old look, maybe slightly (dare I say it) 'geeky' but in some way cool. It felt uniquely Ubuntu. However, I am not adverse to change and I feel the new look and ID is relevant to where Ubuntu is going.

I don't really care one way or the other. The basic colours soon disappear as you start working on something or as you browse. The initial splash is just a necessary 'evil' as you boot up.

It is fairly easy to change things but I always use whatever comes out of the box!

I think my favorite color scheme was jaunty. I absolutely hate the purple lucid theme. The first thing I did when I installed was change all the art work.

The purple isn't all that good but it a good decision. After i installed lucid i felt a bit of awww.

I was getting sick of the brown myself. I'm really loving LL, but you can't help but notice it's a little Mac-esque, no? Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Thank goodness we all don't like the same things. I really disliked Karmic at all levels, colours included. I liked Jaunty a lot :-)

I'll agree with that... it had to be :-)

The brown was a good idea from the start.
Now it's Ubuntu classic.

The new Branding and default appearance is the first Ubuntu that my wife hasn't immediately said "What the hell is this, what have you installed now?"

Karmic was my first ubuntu and it was ok but Lucid really put a smile on my face. I really like the purple.

Well, technically, for Radiance, it still is sorta 'brown'.

But I'll admit, the Human theme in karmic has an attractive 'human' warmth to it, that other themes don't.

I usually just go with the default. I'm more interested in performance than look I guess.

I don't know what to do now! :(

I saw a thread where users were enthusing about the colour schemes in Warty and Gutsy and who knows what other versions. And I thought Kewl, cos I had a bunch of old CDs - Breezy, Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy... so I figured I could stick some old colour schemes into my more modern installation and have some real old school things going on...

But then I checked my Ubuntu CD drawer and... OMG I dunno what's happened! I can find only the CDs for Jaunty and Karmic! My collection of old Ubuntu CDs has disappeared! I can't believe I threw them out (I'm a real hoarder, you know?) - but they're gone! So now I'm flummoxed! What am I gonna do?

Still, the news that Lucid has gone purple is pretty interesting. I've been a major fan of purple since my primary school days; so maybe I'll upgrade to Lucid and go purple. That'll be nice I guess.

But I am seriously hacked off about the disappearing CDs. I had a nice collection of ye olde Ubuntus forming, and now they seem to have nearly all gone! Never again shall I see Breezy's godawful interface! What a downer!

Can anyone point me in the right direction for downloads of the old themes and colour schemes. Breezy and its ilk looked dreadful, but that's all part of the fun isn't it! I'm gonna go search some more cupboards. I WANT MY BREEZY!!!!!

Before 10.04, I would have agreed that Brown was absolutely fine. Honestly, its not something I really care about all that much, and I guess yeah, I thought it was organic and original. But the improvement in Lucid has changed me. With Ambiance, now my desktop actually feels slick. Much nicer than any other mainstream distro IMHO.
