how do I enable desktop effects in Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook?

i have already installed my updated video drivers and the "Visual Effects" menu is still grayed out.

Compiz is not installed in the UNR, so no effects are possible.

I do not know if they can be enabled if you install compiz, or if they conflict with something, but most netbooks would probably find it difficult to run compiz anyway, as they are not generally very powerful in the graphics side of things.

Give it a try, if you don't mind playing around.

In fact I have a desktop system installed from a UNR iso file and with ubuntu-desktop added afterwards, so I might try it out on my system, logging in to the UNR desktop, just to see what happens, as I do have compiz running from the startup applications dialog.

I installed netbook edition on my desktop (from a normal install which already has compiz).
When I run the netbook session compiz effects work fine.
