X11VNC issue after upgrading to 10.04

Hello,
I am very illiterate when it comes to Linux in all it's forms, so be gentle. I run Ubuntu for my webserver and for TS3. My server is a headless setup which I use putty to open an SSH tunnel and then X11VNC for the GUI. I have had no issues with this method until I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. When I now try to start the X11VNC with -display :0 or -find it is unable to resolve an xdisplay, or so it tells me. Now if I plug a monitor into the server and boot up I can open a X11VNC session with no problems.
I'll post the errors I get with both -display :0 and -find with a headless setup followed by my graphics information. Also I did have some issues during the upgrade process where it would time out and I had to restart it two more times before it finally finished. Not sure if that would have any purtenance or not. Any help here would be greatly appreciated, thank you all in advance. :)

Some tips and guidelines:

** An X server (the one you wish to view) must be running before x11vnc is
started: x11vnc does not start the X server. (however, see the -create
option if that is what you really want).

** You must use -display <disp>, -OR- set and export your $DISPLAY
environment variable to refer to the display of the desired X server.
- Usually the display is simply ":0" (in fact x11vnc uses this if you forget
to specify it), but in some multi-user situations it could be ":1", ":2",
or even ":137". Ask your administrator or a guru if you are having
difficulty determining what your X DISPLAY is.

** Next, you need to have sufficient permissions (Xauthority)
to connect to the X DISPLAY. Here are some Tips:

- Often, you just need to run x11vnc as the user logged into the X session.
So make sure to be that user when you type x11vnc.
- Being root is usually not enough because the incorrect MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE
file will be accessed. The cookie file contains the secret key that
allows x11vnc to connect to the desired X DISPLAY.
- You can explicitly indicate which MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE file should be used
by the -auth option, e.g.:
x11vnc -auth /home/someuser/.Xauthority -display :0
x11vnc -auth /tmp/.gdmzndVlR -display :0
you must have read permission for the auth file.

** If NO ONE is logged into an X session yet, but there is a greeter login
program like "gdm", "kdm", "xdm", or "dtlogin" running, you will need
to find and use the raw display manager MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE file.
Some examples for various display managers:

gdm: -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth
-auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth
kdm: -auth /var/lib/kdm/A:0-crWk72
-auth /var/run/xauth/A:0-crWk72
xdm: -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-XQvaJk
dtlogin: -auth /var/dt/A:0-UgaaXa

Sometimes the command "ps wwwwaux | grep auth" can reveal the file location.

Only root will have read permission for the file, and so x11vnc must be run
as root (or copy it). The random characters in the filenames will of course
change and the directory the cookie file resides in is system dependent.

Are you sure the Xorg X server is even running when you take the monitor off? Maybe the X server crashes w/o a monitor (this happens often.) If the X server is not running then x11vnc cannot connect to it (and you get output like that you pasted in.)

Run the command:

ps wwaux
to see if the "Xorg" or "X" process is listed (i.e. running.) I don't have access to an ubuntu machine at the moment so I can't tell you what the name would be exactly (i.e. "Xorg" or "X" or perhaps something else.) Just look through all of the above ps command output looking for a command with "X" in the name.

If you don't see it, it probably crashed. Consult the files /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old looking for error messages.

Thank you very much for your reply, I checked my running processes the way you described and did not see anything that pertained to Xorg. I have listed the results below. Also I checked the log files and I can see that it gives me an error but I have not the slightest clue as to why. That information is also listed below.

Yes. See how it is somewhat desperately looking for a monitor (it wants to know the refresh modes it supports) and then giving up? You may want to report this to your distro.

We were able to cook up our own /etc/X11/xorg.conf X server config file with a "fake" monitor:

and then it worked.

BTW, since you are running it headless, I recommend specifying the "vesa" driver and not the "intel" one that I see in your logfile. Headless access will be faster with the "vesa" driver.

Well once again I appreciate your reply. I had to create a xorg.conf file and copy pasted exactly what was in the link you sent my to. The only problem is I still get the exact same problem as before. I'm not sure what I may have done wrong so I'll post again what I get upon starting x11vnc and my current xorg.conf file.
I have also tried removing and then reinstalling x11vnc and it's the same outcome. Lastly I apologize for these very long posts, I'm unsure of how to embed pastes into a scrollable format like I have seen others do. Thank you for any help you can give!

Some tips and guidelines:

** An X server (the one you wish to view) must be running before x11vnc is
started: x11vnc does not start the X server. (however, see the -create

Sometimes the command "ps wwwwaux | grep auth" can reveal the file location.

Only root will have read permission for the file, and so x11vnc must be run
as root (or copy it). The random characters in the filenames will of course
change and the directory the cookie file resides in is system dependent.

After you modified xorg.conf did you restart the X server? If you don't know how to restart the X server (I believe it will be /etc/init.d/gdm for you), then just reboot the computer.

Then look for the X server process in the ps wwaux output. There is no point in trying to run x11vnc until the X server is running.

Edit: Oh wait, I see now you did restart it since I see the "VNC" stuff in the Xorg.0.log. I was confused by the "NVIDIA" strings in there. So now the problem is:

I guess try your "intel" driver instead of "vesa"... I don't like that "NVIDIA GLX Module" in there. It looks like something is messed up. Did you install nvidia proprietary drivers on the system?

I'm confused because I have my other server that I upgraded at the same time and it works perfectly. I even tried copying the xorg.conf from the working server and pasting it on the server I'm having issues with. I really have no clue what to do at this point. I have managed to make the server functional again but still have no access to the gui with vnc.

This wouldn't make a difference. If there is no X server running, x11vnc has nothing to attach to and, of course, will fail. You need to first get the X server running somehow... (is there a command line X configure tool you can run?)

Well I am happy to report that I have found a solution to this issue. It appears that KMS is the culprit and was preventing vesa from loading. I found the information from this thread:

Thanks, I learned something too: I didn't know KMS (kernel modesetting) existed, and now I know how to disable it when it causes problems.
