I'm wondering if anyone knows of a large package (100 tracks or more) of freely-licensed music preferably in MP3 format that spans a range of genres. Thanks!

Define free? You can get music at Jamendo in mp3/vorbis.

Google SXSW torrent, I think it was from 2006. Totally free, totally legal.

It doesn't let you download them all as a group but Amazon always has quite a few MP3s available to download for free. They require that you install their downloader but they have one that actually works pretty well in Linux.
Amazon.com Free MP3s (http://www.amazon.com/gp/s/ref=pe_04/?node=334897011&field-date=20100405-20100511)

I didn't notice you said freely licensed so this may not be what you're looking for..

I said free as in freely-licensed. I know Jamendo but AFAIK they don't have a sampler pack.

Thanks, this looks like a nice and HUGE collection.

Actually I think some of them are licensed freely, and I have seen some good sampler albums on Amazon.

Thanks.

Although the music is all free to download and distribute, I'm fairly sure it's not licensed for completely free use. I can't find out how to confirm that, but my common sense is screaming NO about it. :P

Some music that was released with free license is out there, though. NIN's Trent Reznor distributed the Ghosts I-IV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghosts_I%E2%80%93IV#Release) collection with the "Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license", if that fits your needs. There's more out there but I'm on limited time to find it.

the five dollars for the complete download is totally worth it. ive always been a big fan of NIN, but i think this is some of their best stuff. it's really unique and interesting. NIN - Ghosts I-IV (http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options)

the SXSW torrents should give you some 10 gigs of music additionally you can check clearbits for other indie media distributed freely.
